Meta Tags are invisible tags hidden in the head of your web page. They are read by the search
engines when they spider your site. Orginally Meta Tags were used extensively by the search
engines, but their purpose has been abused so much, that they no longer hold the importance
they had at first. There is much debate on whether or not you even need Meta Tags. Currently,
my meta tags are used in some of the search engines.
The most important tag is not invisible at all. It's the title tag listed in the head of your
webpage. I believe there is a science as to the order of keyword appearance in the title, and
throughout the web page. I am playing with the idea now. Google gives great importance to the
title tag, but I am not sure of the best order.
Following is an example of a title tag, and meta tags:
<html>
<head>
<title>Bryan's Literature Page, Novels, Essays, Poetry</title>
<meta name="Description" content="A literature page with orginal Novels, Essays, and Poetry.">
<meta name="Keywords" content="literature page, novels, essays, poetry">
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow">
<head>
Do you see the pattern? The keywords are listed in the title tage, the description tag, and
the keywords tag. The keywords are: literature page, novel, essays, and poetry. This is an
elementary example, but it illustrates the point, and simpler is better in search engine
optimization.
You need to decide on the best keywords for your site. Try to use specific keywords, if you
want results. In the example above I used some general keywords. This might produce results,
but more results come through more specific keywords. Maybe modern literature, or electronic
novels, or American essays. Give it some thought.
There are several resources available on the Web to help you choose effective keywords. One
such program is the Wordtracker. You can give it a free spin to see how you like it. They
also have other products you can use to optimize your site. Check it out by clicking the
link below. I hope it helps.
